Tales from the Deep

How do we make sense of the sea? Tales from the Deep is an exhibit that allows visitors to explore the seas like the ancient mariners did—through storytelling. As visitors explore the spaces of the USS Becuna, they will experience her history through whimsical tales of ocean life and lore. From real mishaps and misdeeds to the creatures of legend, we will create a lighthearted narrative of a small boat with a big impact. This exhibition will use oral histories, personal artifacts, and immersive installations as visitors are transported through timeless tales of whimsy, woe, and the things that go bump in the deep.

  • For my second semester studio course, members of each department within the Museum Studies program worked collaboratively in teams to produce an exhibition for an institution, in this case, the Independence Seaport Museum in Philadelphia, PA. Our collection was a single object: a submarine.

  • Primary: Millennials (25-35 years)

    Secondary: Young Families

    Tertiary: People with Disabilities

  • Cognitive: Visitors will experience the USS Becuna through real-life accounts. They will consider how stories impact our collective memory of the sea.

Psychomotor: Visitors will create meaning from tattoo designs.

Affective: Visitors will go on an emotional journey of excitement, curiosity, wonder. They will connect to at least one of the personal stories within the exhibit.
